  3. 27 October 2017

    Explore Rome at your leisure

Rome has something special to offer to all visitors, no matter their interests and tastes. Whether you daydream about fighting with gladiators in the Coliseum, debating with togaed senators in the Forum, tossing a coin in a fabled fountain, or being awestruck by the magnificence of St. Peter’s Basilica and Michelangelo’s masterpieces, Rome seems to live up to its sobriquet as the Eternal City.

When you need sustenance, today’s Rome will provide delizioso pasta e vino. Or perhaps you draw strength from a little retail therapy—the Italians are also renowned for their sense of style.

  5. 29 October 2017

Livorno (Florence & Pisa), Italy. Arrive 8am (docked overnight)

Ah, Florence—sublime birthplace of the Renaissance, its historic center full to bursting with elegant squares, imposing palaces, magnificent churches, and museums with such an abundance of riches it could make an art lover weep for joy.

The list of illustrious names connected with this city is mind-boggling: Botticelli, Dante, Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Galileo. Other colorful and fascinating characters were of dubious reputation: Machiavelli, and the religious extremist Savonarola, with his bonfire of the vanities. For many years the city was ruled by the powerful Medici family, patrons of the arts and bankers to the papacy, whose line included six kings and two popes.

  7. 31 October 2017

    Monte-Carlo, Monaco. Docked from 8am until 9pm

Monte-Carlo is a place with a reputation that’s far bigger than its mere 0.76 square miles. It’s the kind of place where professional athletes, royals, socialites, and Bond villains (or the actors who play them) rub elbows while searching for elusive lady luck. Come prepared to be amazed by the opulence, by the breathtaking beautiful surroundings, and for some of the finest people watching this side of the Atlantic.

The Grand Casino is not to be missed, even for non-gamblers. Let it ride, bet it all on black, or simply marvel at the decadence of your luxurious surroundings.

Not into burning money? How about burning rubber? The prestigious Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix race has been held here since 1929. Get the authentic experience by renting a performance car to take you for a spin around the route, if you’re not here to see the real thing.

After your thrill ride, take a walk through the medieval village, known as “The Rock” in the heart of Monte-Carlo. And if you happen to end up in France, don’t worry. Simply cross the street and you’ll be back across the border faster than you can say “jackpot”.

  8. 01 November 2017

Ajaccio, Corsica, France. Docked from 8am until 5pm

While he may have been notoriously small, Napoléon left a huge mark on his hometown of Ajaccio. The diminutive dictator’s presence is visible throughout the city in everything from his childhood home, the Maison Bonaparte, to museums like Salon Napoléonien, seaside statues, and street names.

But history buffs aren’t the only ones who will find plenty to see and do in Ajaccio. Art lovers will want to head to the Palais Fesch Musée de Beaux Arts to see the largest collection of Italian Renaissance Paintings in France (outside of the Louvre, of course). And foodies should check out the main market on Boulevard du Roi Jerome for myrtle and plum liqueurs, melt-in-your-mouth beignets (sugared donuts), and brocciu, a type of pungent cheese.

On the trendy route de Sanguinaires, stock up on French beauty secrets found in the many apothecaries and traditional pharmacies. (Spoiler alert: We think it probably has something to do with the handmade soaps and lotions made from fragrant herbs like honeysuckle, lavender, and thyme.)

  9. 02 November 2017

Palamos (Figueres), Spain. Docked from 1pm until 10pm

Palamos sits right in the heart of the Costa Brava, the Wild Coast, deriving its name from the rugged, rocky shoreline, punctuated by excellent beaches and picturesque fishing villages.

For a change of pace, and a day of the bizarre and surreal, consider a trip to Figures, home to the museum of its famous and eccentric native son, Salvador Dali, he of the extravagant mustache and melting pocket watches. Dali spent many years designing and painting the facility—in essence it is itself his single largest work, and contains not only his own creations, but his personal art collection as well.

  10. 03 November 2017

Tarragona, Spain. Docked from 8am until 2pm

A unique blend of Spanish and Roman history, Tarragona is a seaside treasure on Spain’s Northeast coast just waiting to be discovered. Dating back to the 5th century BC, it’s the oldest Roman settlement on the Iberian Peninsula, and the city’s ruins are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take in stunning ocean views while exploring the Roman Amphitheatre, or while strolling along the Mediterranean Balcony.

Beyond standard sightseeing, get an up-close and personal look at this incredible architecture as you dine at the many restaurants nestled under the arches of the ancient Roman Circus that once hosted chariot races. For the freshest catch of the day, head to the El Sarrallo neighborhood and order a seafood paella that puts all others to shame.

Other highlights of this Catalonian city include pristine Blue Flag certified beaches, the impressive Cathedral of Tarragona, intricate Roman mosaics at the National Archaeological Museum, and the death-defying art of building human towers called castells. Tarragona is a must-see for history-buffs and lovers of maritime culture.

Barcelona, Spain. Arrive 7pm (docked overnight)

Dynamic Barcelona is all about architecture, from the magnificent medieval buildings of the Gothic Quarter to the Modernist movement typified by the work of Antoni Gaudi. Though his materials were stone and metal, his forms were organic, awash in curves, swirls, and colors. His masterpiece is the amazing Church of the Sagrada Familia, colossal and as yet unfinished, though construction began in 1882.

A contemporary contribution to the scene is Ricardo Bofill’s post modernist National Theater of Catalonia, an imaginative combination of classical and modern design, with a greenhouse-like lobby.

Azamara Club Cruises

Azamara Club Cruises is a deluxe cruise experience for discerning travellers who long to reach out-of-the-ordinary destinations and indulge in amenities and service unparalleled on the high seas. The unique offerings of Azamara Club Cruises are beyond compare: complimentary 24 hour room service is provided in every stateroom; shore excursions are designed to let guests become part of the fabric of life in each destination, instead of merely being an observer; the enrichment programs offer everything from culinary to photographic explorations; two specialty restaurants provide the finest cuisine at sea; live entertainment can be enjoyed nightly; and the level of service offered is unmatched. Azamara Club Cruises consist of two intimate ships, Azamara Journey and Azamara Quest. Each can carry 694 fortunate guests and because they are smaller and sleeker than larger cruise ships, they can sail to ports that others simply cannot reach. In addition to offering a more personalised experience, the ships have recently undergone a $17.5 million revitalisation with new European bedding and soft furnishings, flat screen televisions, new verandah decking and furniture, and wireless internet service in all staterooms and public areas. Plus, 93% of the staterooms offer ocean views and 68% have a private veranda. You may be wondering where the name Azamara comes from. Azamara is a coined term derived from the Romance languages. This includes the more obvious links to blue (az) and the sea (mar). The name was also inspired by a star, Acamar. In Classical times, the star Acamar was the most southerly bright star that could be seen from the latitude of Greece. Azamara Club Cruises can be seen as a star on the blue sea.
